Finishing Tank Setup

Yellow Tang

Finishing tank setup, to finish the tank setup fit the cover glass, the hood for lighting and check for leaks in your new tropical fish tank setup.

Now fill the tank with water, do not fill the tank up to the top because if you need to put your hands in the tank to reposition anything the water will spill over the side of the tank. On most tanks you will find a thin length of glass (about four centimetres wide) fitted to the inside front and rear of the tank these are to fit cover glass plates. Cover glass is two sliding pieces of glass that stop water condensation and fish from jumping out of the tank, these normally need to be specially made, if you have these slide them into position now. Fit your hood onto the top of the tank, hoods have fluorescent tubes fitted to light the tank for viewing and give the plants light. You can purchase a special terminal block that attatchs to the side of the tank, all wiring from lights, filters and pumps can be wired into this and only one cable leads out from this that can be plugged into an electricity supply.
Ok check all round the tank to make sure there are no leaks, plug into the power supply and you should hear the pump and see air bubbles rising from the airstone or water coming out of the powerhead. At this point all is set up except the water isn't ready for any fish yet it has to be cleaned of ammonia and chlorine. There are many bottles of purifiers available and you should add some to the water following the instructions. Now we have to get the nitrogen cycle to start, the easiest way to get this started is if you know someone with an established tank and you can take some of there water and add it to yours, if not you can buy bottles of bacteria to add to the water. This is needed because of fish excrement, dead plant leaves and even undiscovered dead fish, all of this causes ammonia in the water and will kill the fish, certain fish could survive with high levels but they would't be very happy.
