Tank Accessories

napoleon fish

Add tank accessories. It is time to place the tank accessories such as plants, rocks, heater etc. You now need to choose the tank accessories you want to place in your tank.

Now we add the water to the tank, it would be easier to use a hose as depending on the size of the tank it can take a lot of water to fill. A tank that is 36x12x15" (90xx3038cm) will hold 89 litres of water and be able to hold 36 one inch fish. You can calculate the amount of fish your tank will hold by using the following formula. For every gallon of water you can keep a one inch fish if its a new tank but afer six months when the tank has matured you can keep a two inch fish per gallon of water. So fill the tank half way up with water. Now is the time to add any accessories you have decided to fit into the tank, firstly add any plants you can either use artificial plants or real plants if you use real plants you will have to have a hood fitted with lighting to make the plants grow. Place the tallest plants at the rear and build up towards the front although this is a matter of your own interpretation how you want your tank to look but you don't really want to obscure the fish from view.
Next place any ornaments or rocks into position. Next thing to do is place the heater into the tank, these come with suckers attatched to the heater so you just have to push these onto the back glass of the tank trailing the power cord over the side of the tank. Next is the filter (if not using undergravel filter) there are many different types of filter, box filters which are air powered and come in a number of sizes to suit small to medium sized tanks. The airflow draws water through the chamber of the filter which can be filled with the filter wool, carbon or specialised adsorbent resins. There are internal power filters which are electrically powered and more powerful which draw water through sponge or other filter material, and powerheads which you fit if you are using an undergravel filter.
